From now on - or until I change my mind - books will be posted in the sidebar and reviews written here. Having recently discovered Sodoku puzzles, I've been sidetracked somewhat from reading, but still managed to read two books recently.
The Sound of One Hand Clapping by Richard Flanagan. I'd had this book on my "to read" shelf for a very long time; for reasons unfathomable to me, the cover picture put me off from reading it. Realizing that was ridiculous, I picked up the book and was drawn into the story almost immediately. The plot concerns an immigrant family in Tasmania - the parents have witnessed immense horrors of war in Yugoslavia; at the start of the story, the mother walks away from the workers' camp where they live in a hovel. The ramifications of her leaving and the nightmares from the father's past have profound effects on the father and the daughter as he raises her. The journey they both take through pain and recovery is dark, but not without hope. A good read. 4 stars
Confession by Olen Steinhauer. A police procedural investigation set in mid-1950s Hungary. Interesting, easy to read, plot twists happen a bit suddenly though. 3 stars.
